The first step is admitting you have a problem.

Yesterday, I wanted to start my latest graphic novel purchase, which is From Hell by Alan Moore, but I happened to glance over at my ‘currently reading’ pile and saw to my dismay that I had 11 books with bookmarks inside them. 11. Not 2, not 4. ELEVEN. Technically speaking, 9 of them are stagnant. I’m having multiple (literary) affairs and it. must. end.

So! I’m making it a goal of sorts to read at least 5 of these 11 books before year’s end. I already know I am preparing to give away a couple of these babies so that really shouldn’t be too daunting… right?

Here are the books:

  1. A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki
    • I actually REALLY enjoy reading this book when I make myself sit down and read.
  2. People Who Eat Darkness by Richard L. Parry (giving this one away)
  3. Some Girls, Some Hats, & Hitler (giving this one away)
  4. The Stand by Stephen King (good god….)
  5. Emma by Jane Austen
  6. The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
  7. The Lottery & Other Stories by Shirley Jackson (my queen)
  8. The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos L. Zafon
  9. Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
  10. Far, Far Away by Tom McNeal
  11. House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski

If you’ve read any of these, please, I implore you… persuade me to read them!!

I find polyreading such a tricky business. I’d much rather read one book at a time, but with a book blog, those days are gone! That said there’s nothing worse than a stagnant pile – too many books on the go and it feels like you’re making no progress with any of them, so this year I’ve set myself a limit – only 5 books on the go at any one time. Only time will tell if i can stick to it though!

    1. I asked my boyfriend for advice and he stated the obvious: “Stick to one book and finish it before you start on another!”. However, that is so much easier said than done haha. 5 books at one time sounds doable; you’re able to choose from a few different moods/genres so you’re never bored! I’ll keep that in mind. 🙂

  2. Well you obviously have to read Emma because Jane Austen. It’s actually quite funny and modern in some ways. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a quick win – you will read it in no time and it will be off your mind. It’s also REALLY good.
Finally, The Shadow of the Wind is one of the best books about books ever so do yourself a favour and get on that one immediately.

  3. Ha, I actually made a mental list of 5 books I think I can realistically manage to read this year and they include The Lottery and Other Stories (I’ve since finished, whoo!), A Tale for the Time Being, and the 3 you mentioned. 🙂 I do liked what I read of Emma (I’ve heard people say they couldn’t get through it because of unlikable characters, but I don’t mind them at all) so that will be finished in 2016…. promise!
